God Loves Us and That’s All

As you do not know the path of the wind, or how the body is formed in a mother’s womb, so you cannot understand the work of God, the Maker of all things. (Ecclesiastes 11:5 NIV)

That was the Bible verse we read for worship tonight together with the kids.  Our method is to read the verse aloud then ask what they think it means.  Once we’ve had some ideas, and they can be pretty out there sometimes, then we sum it up for them in a way they might understand.  They nod their heads knowingly or say, “I don’t get that at all.”  If that’s the case we start over and explain it in a different way.  We always try to get to the heart of the matter, make sure everyone really understands.

Ok, back to tonight.  The initial feedback was more along the lines of I have no idea than anything else, with my daughter throwing out some random thoughts of her own.  She is never short on words.  I like this verse.  I was excited to get into this verse with them.  I thought we could have fun with it.  Of course, anytime I think I have all the answers I should know I’m going to learn from them.

After doing the summary part of the worship, I again asked what they thought it meant.  Now they had more thoughts.  My daughter said it meant we didn’t know how things were made.  My son said something about Him making the Universe and since we didn’t know anything about that then how could we know anything at all.

We were getting closer.  I said, “What is the most important thing we need to know about God?  If we don’t really know anything about Him, than what can we know.”  And that’s when we got to the heart of the matter.  My daughter said, “We know He is real and He is going to take us to Heaven.”  Wow!  I kept prompting.  Was there anything else we knew about God.  And then my son nailed it, “He loves us.”

Yes, that really is all we need to know.  It took a little while but in the end my kids got it.  All we really need to know about God, all that really matters, not the wind, or the bones in the womb, or the immensity of the universe, all we really need to know is that God Is Real and that God Loves Us.

Happy Sabbath!
